Disney Channel Review
Hey Jessie TV show - Hey Jessie TV Show
I also think that one very subtle but serious issue is when Jessie makes the children be nice to and spend time with people (Luke with creepy Connie and Zuri with Stuart Wooten - season 2 episode 7) is dangerous for children. Yes, it is important to be kind to people who you might not be attracted to and who might be attracted to you, BUT YOU DO NOT HAVE TO SPEND TIME WITH THEM. I think--especially with Zuri and Stuart--that is dangerous and scary to teach girls they need to accommodate guys who are obsessed with them, and that they have to "be nice" by spending time together, letting him encroach on her privacy and freedom. I've seen way too many young women, teenagers, and women not know how to create boundaries and protect themselves from very pushy men. I would want my daughters to watch shows that showed them how to be kind yet to not entertain and appease men who they had no interest in. It's OK for Zuri to not like Stuart and to not want to spend time with him. She should not be forced to spend time with a man just because he likes her. That is giving girls the wrong message.
Overall, I think Hey Jessie is a wonderful show. It's my niece's favorite show and it has become one of mine. However, I think it is important to highlight these issues and to be aware of what kind of messages we might be sending to our children. The show is clearly aware in many other ways, and it does send a lot of positive messages. We just have to be careful. Children are so impressionable.
